Coffee! But well balanced and tastes like a great coffee that's also beer. Your taste buds will be confused for sure.

Release 28. Lower ABV at 9.9%. Big time coffee - by far the dominant flavor. Should be called a breakfast stout. Following coffee is a mix of sweet and bitter. Solid brew - certainly not the best I've had. Also not the worst.

Very well proportioned chocolate to stout flavor. Makes me think of dark ages when monks made beer.

Great beer! Batch # 25. First few sips I was wishing for more cocoa, but once the alcohol warmth dissipated the cocoa stood out. Definite coffee flavor but not overwhelming. Great texture and finish. If you like imperials this is top notch.

Release 23. This is the real deal. Pour heavy to whip up the head. Lots of chocolate and coffee and kick.

Foamy, tan head. Opaque brown/black color. Effusive coffee and cocoa aromas buttressed with malty undertones. On the palate coffee dominates with malt in the finish. Surprisingly medium bodied with fine/soft carbonation. Not bad.
This bottle came from release 11 with 12.1 ABV.
Release #54 with 12.5 ABV. Consistent with earlier releases. Perhaps more chocolate in the nose and palate.

Release #10. Typical dark stout. Tanish 1 finger head. Huge coffee notes on the nose and taste. Getting the cocoa nibs and some chocolate as well. Not getting much of the barrel character. Coffee dominates it! Solid brew!

Batch #10 was similar to southern tier black water series. Creamy, smooth with cocoa, coffee and a slightly bitter finish. Batch #7 was much more average with no unique attributes. Research batch information before you buy!

Great rich dark chocolate color. Subtle coffee and chocolate on nose with smokiness of charred oak. Caramel taste with bitterness that compliments the charred oakiness and is offset slightly by blackberry sweetness. Coffee and chocolate. Bold but not too heavy.
