Full disclosure: I used to be a huge stout fan but my tastes have changed, but felt like one tonight. This one is decent, good alongside my turkey chili but not sure I would enjoy it drinking it on its own. I like that it's not too bland, a tiny bit of hops come through, but the finish is a bit off for me. Maybe I'm just not into stouts anymore...

Espresso and an herbal flavor (licorice?). Not the best Narwhal, but not bad.

C+. Too much bitter astringency for me, stick to the barrel aged. In September 2018 tried the 2018 & 2014 side by side. Liked both, but the older was best for me and blended they were wonderful. Both rated an A..

At NC brewery, sampler, 10.2%, wait a year and let things ferment more, ok stout

Upon the first step the first thing that comes to mind is the Deschutes Black Butte anniversary release. Without having one side-by-side it's hard to say if it tastes exactly like Deschutes but it really does seem like it is the same. Sierra Nevada does brew up in Chico which is fairly close to Bend, Oregon so knows maybe they are using the same water. Either way this is a fine beer to say the least. It is definitely smooth; it is definitely rich; it is definitely full of flavor and it is definitely very tasty. It is definitely going to be purchased.
